Service to commemorate the centenary of the death of
Private George Henry Edwards 236001
1/1st Battalion The Herefordshire Regiment
Private Edwards was wounded on 6th November 1917 during the 3rd battle of Gaza and sadly died on the 4th February in the Southern General Hospital in Bristol. He was later buried in St. Catherine’s Churchyard. His Headstone was damaged and thanks to Cat Whiteaway, Jim Buckley, Leslie Wilson, Adrian and Belinda Shaw the headstone has been restored. Just over £800.00 was raised to cover the cost of the repairs; the remainder was divided between the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Royal British Legion. We commemorated the centenary of his death on Sunday 4th February in the Churchyard. The weather was sunny and chilly but 82 people including some 30 of Pte. Edwards’s relatives, the bugler and piper 1st Regiment Irish and other Regimental representatives were very moved by the service led by Revd. Elizabeth Cathie.
